敦煌石窟壁画、彩塑和藏经洞出土绢纸绘画中所存与写本书籍阅读活动密切相关的艺术呈现，是中古时期僧俗士人或学子读书活动的生动再现。其中，敦煌壁画所存“体罚学郎图”以艺术视角生动勾勒出中古时期学堂教育的历史场景，是中古社会生活史的真实投射。结合传世和出土文献中相关教育史资料，从知识传播和接受的角度出发，文章着重对学郎读书场所、阅读书目和传授者身份等问题进行了考论，同时还关注到中古敦煌地区学郎所读书卷的尺幅和装帧形态等细节问题。综合考察学郎所读书卷和“教与罚”在古代社会生活史中的价值，对于了解中国古代书籍史发展的具体形态，以及古代教育史资源的当代开发利用都具有重要意义。
