Abstract

The early identification of frontier interdisciplinary fields is crucial for enhancing national scientific and technological competitiveness and optimizing strategic technological deployment. This study systematically reviews the concepts of interdisciplinary and frontier fields, clearly defines the connotation and key characteristics of frontier interdisciplinary fields and proposes a theoretical interpretation of "triple intersection × element intersection" within a multidimensional framework. By comparing existing methodological systems, the study further develops an identification pathway for frontier interdisciplinary fields based on multidimensional intersection relationships. A forward-looking framework is constructed at the macro, meso, and micro levels: the macro level emphasizes policy and strategic guidance to identify key development directions; the meso level measures growth mechanisms through dynamic analysis of fields; and the micro level focuses on identifying critical breakthroughs based on innovative elements. The theoretical framework and forward-looking pathway proposed in this study provide a solid foundation for empirical research on the identification and prediction of frontier interdisciplinary fields and offer significant reference value for national and regional science and technology strategic decision-making.
