Abstract

In this article, we discuss the positioning of computational linguistics in the context of computational humanities. We focus on three main issues: the position of computational linguistics in the context of computational humanities, the research paradigm, and its relationship with other research fields in computational humanities. The term "computational humanities" clarifies the research paradigm in which the study of digital humanities solves research problems in the humanities with computational technologies. We find that current work in computational linguistics shows distinctly engineering character, treating language as data, with little work answering the research questions of linguistics. Although many scholars consider computational linguistics as one of the research directions in linguistics, we do not see many cases of using computational technology for linguistic (especially for Chinese language) research at present. Therefore, this paper proposes a computational linguistics research paradigm that uses computational techniques for linguistic research, using text readability work as an example. We believe that computational linguistics is no different from other research fields in computational humanities and should work under a unified research paradigm. Computational linguistics as a research method requires a balance between validity and interpretability. This is the positioning of computational linguistics in the framework of "humanities as the core and computation as the tool".
