Abstract

Kang Taoran's Temple was built in early years of the Republic of China as folk award to Wuwei County's magistrate in office Kang Taoran because he successfully exempted a special tax. In early Qing Dynasty, this played a positive role, but later it became means of exploitation to farmers. Some enlightened gentlemen had tried many years and when Kang Taoran was the magistrate of Wuwei, he exempted this tax and the people there built a temple as recognition of his merit. The inscription recorded Kang Taoran's contribution and in which can be seen the gentry's important function in stabilizing the community in period of social change.
