The Development and Reform of Library Science Education in China in the Past 70 Years

Abstract

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China 70 years ago, library science education has gone through five stages: slow and tortuous development stage(1949-1966); stagnation and regression stage(1966-1977); reconstruction and rapid development stage(1978-1989); adjustment and reform stage(1990-1999); transformation and innovation stage(2000-).In addition, library science education has achieved seven achievements in the past 70 years:the establishment and improvement of education system, the scientific location of specialty and discipline, the formation of the education system with complete levels and types, the continuous development of discipline construction;  the construction of advanced educational content system; the constantly improving of the internationalization of library science education; numerous talents have been cultivated for libraries and other information industries. The core of  the future reform of library science education is to solve the  contradiction between "change" and "unchanged"。What is going to change is the concept、goal、mode and content of education,and to strengthen the  relationship between education and practice。What is going to retain is the core knowledge of library science, the humanistic tradition and value rationality of library science.
