Abstract

After decades of fast development, China has listed at the top position in the world in terms of the amount of domestic patents. However, systematic research based on empirical data still lacks in the world-wide progress and impact of international patents from China. Based on 4 million patents and their citation network from the USPTO database, this study intends to unveil the international development and communication of USPTO patents from China, thus providing policy implications for China's deep involvement in world-wide technology activities. We find that, on the one hand, Chinese patents maintain frequent communications with certain areas in the world, exhibit prominent characteristics in certain technology fields, and keep a good momentum. On the other hand, however, China still has to catch up with other developed areas regarding its total number and impact of USPTO patents.
